The Burger Kitchen Los Angeles

I ordered the Burger Delicious, a grilled eight-ounce patty with green leaf lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, pickles, and chipotle ketchup. The self-promoting name is part of a larger gimmick in burger nomenclature that has become de rigueur at this new breed of burger restaurant. At Burger Kitchen you can order a Buzz Burger, The Eiffel Tower, The Godfather, a Hawaiian Surfer Dude, etc. (you get the idea). In all they offer 22 different burgers.

David is challenged to cook a fresh burger, he comes up with the “Redemption Burger”,whilst owner Alan cooks up a prepared burger. Gordon loves David’s burger but hates Alan’s, this leads to a walk out. For the evening service, Daniel is sent out to work front of house and there is ticket confusion. Food speeds out of the kitchen just to speed back in so Daniel and David argue and Daniel throws him out the kitchen. The guests start to leave and David comes back for the money he is owed, Gen writes a check and asks Daniel to put cash in to cover the cheque. Daniel’s partner Wendy tells Daniel’s parents he isn’t putting in any more cash and another argument breaks out. Daniel breaks down and is taken off for a chat by Ramsay.

Episode Recap Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Burger Kitchen, Los Angeles, CA, the restaurant has been open for just 1 year this restaurant has serious issues. In order to maintain the restaurant Alan Saffron used his son Daniels inheritance money without his permission and doesn’t treat him as a partner, barring him from knowing about the restaurants finances. No one in the family is getting along and no one in the kitchen is either, which is mismanaged and serving below par food. Gordon is impressed by the location and interior but the owners say they are losing $6000 per month and blame ever changing chefs, menus and a Yelp conspiracy as Yelp are deleting good reviews. Gordon samples the food: a range of burgers and a meat pie. He is not impressed, calling the food bland, flavourless and not cooked properly. Chef David is the one said to be to blame for the flavourless food but he says he is not allowed to change anything and also says he has not been paid wages. Daniel is at a loss on what to do and does not trust his father.

This is the problem generally with Burger Kitchen. It just doesn’t have the practice or polish of a professional restaurant. Rather, it’s as though some professionals decided they wanted to get into the restaurant business, as though creating a successful restaurant was simply about spotting trends and cashing in. In this case the folks behind Burger Kitchen might have found themselves on the losing end of a bubble economy.

The Burger Kitchen’s father-son team are Alan Saffron and Daniel Saffron. They’ve had notions of teaming up on a restaurant project for years (Alan once owned a steakhouse in his native Australia), but didn’t go for it until this most recent venture. They decided on a high-end burger restaurant because it seemed to make good business sense. They already have plans to open four more locations if this first one works. Alas, that turns out to be a rather large “if.”

Critics have commented that Fox’s adaptation of Kitchen Nightmares strayed from the strengths of the original Channel 4 series. Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune said, “Leave it to Fox to take something the Brits did pretty well and muck it up”. She added, “Never mind the cooking; this edition of the show appears to be more interested in playing up the family dramas at the restaurants Ramsay visits”. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times commented, “Whereas the British Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares is fundamentally a food show — it has interesting things to show you about how a restaurant runs and a kitchen works, the wonders of local markets and what you can make from them if you’re Gordon Ramsay or willing to follow his instructions — the Fox edition emphasizes mishap, argument and emotional breakdown almost to the exclusion of cuisine”.

Best of luck to the family and hopefully their business will improve from the Kitchen Nightmare experience. It is quite possible that there have been positive changes and it is up to the people of Los Angeles to go check it out for themselves. Also kudos on the beer collection that everyone raves about. As for Kitchen Nightmares and Gordon Ramsay, I love them and this is not intended to be against them at all. I believe that Gordon and his staff honestly had good intentions in trying to help what they believed to be a poor family and their restaurant. But you have to wonder, how much help did the Saffrons really need?

I am, in a way tempted to try this place but I cannot support it considering that in my opinion it is very likely that the family reached out to Gordon for publicity and attention rather than to receive real help. Just my opinion. Also, the one time I made it to LA I opted for Kosher meals.  Although I must admit that Burger Kitchen is highly praised for its extensive beer collection, which is fantastic. Too bad I live very far away from this place. I wish them the best in their restaurant venue. Also, I do not have a personal vendetta against this family.

anonymous1023 permalink I am sure glad you said that. I know there was a burger kitchen in the UK.. and it puzzled me how this guy came up with the same name. This guy is something else, and I fear he is a scam artist far worse than the show even protrayed.. It was a pretty unbelieveable show wasnt it. We do not do things in America this way, trust me..

anonymous1023 permalink Alan Saffron opened The Burger Kitchen, Inc.in 2009…. Daniel was brought in in early 2010… at least that is why my solid source shows, and Alan is orchestraing it all…. but there is more……..

I can tell you right now, I know Alan personally, and this episode of “Burger Kitchen” is absolutely correct–in fact, he’s even worse as a human being. This show portrayed him in a much more fair light than I would have. For example, he made some girls applying for waitressing jobs slip down to their underwear. He’s more chauvinist and arrogant than this show could ever capture.
the burger kitchen los angeles 11

Actually if you watch the episode neither person ever says they ONLY received 250k, Alan only says he used that much of his money and he took that much of his sons money. Watching the show I assumed he received more than that because Daniels parents continue to ask him for more money and if he’s not getting paid a salary from The Burger Kitchen where would that money come from? In fact when the chef is fired they ask Daniel if he can deposit the $1,000 into the account so the check will clear and during another part Daniels girlfriend says the parents use the restaurants money to pay their rent but Daniel has to pay his out of his own pocket. I don’t think this show is stage at all. I don’t know why people think this. The reason people still fail after the show leaves is because their egos emerge and they start to believe they know best again even though they have been handed a recipe for success.

Me permalink You are quite correct, Dan. The conversion is off. I am not sure how I can get the conversion rate for the year the Saffrons received their inheritance. Not to mention that there could have been taxes that might have taken off a piece of the total amount. (Maybe even probate fees as well) The Burger Kitchen episode only spoke about the inheritance that Alan and Daniel received. But, the other Saffron grandchildren also got their share. Unlike Daniel, however, it appears they did not choose to get into this business venture. So that leaves another question. Did Alan choose Daniel and chose to sacrifice his inheritance by forcing him into the restaurant? Or did Daniel choose to open the join with his father as a partner (as suggested by the some of the links above). This certainly is a story that keeps unfolding. Thank you so much for your reply! It was a pleasure to read.

First, my compliments to your blog sight as it is the fairest that I have read. I never stole one dollar from my son and we both jointly agreed to go into Burger Kitchen together. All the company minutes and stock certificates, from the day we openened varify this and it has been further confirmed by Daniel’s lawyer. The restaurant is closed and I found a buyer who will return all of Daniel’s money first before i see a penny. There is much more to the show than meets the eye as it was highly editited and i was deliberately potrayed as the villian. Under no circumstance would i hurt any member of my family and only wish them all the best. The book has been out for four years, was a best seller in Australia, and my idea to make it in to a movie or TV show has long passed. Ramsay genuinely saw it on the desk in the office and the producers decided to use it. There is so many more things that I could say, but everyone has already formed thier opinion, and the haters far outweigh everyone else.
